Welcome to the Bow Community Primary School Governor page. Here you can find some information about the role of school governor. You can also read minutes of the meetings.

The Governing Body is made up of Parent Governors, Staff Governors, Local Authority Governors and Community Governors. Each governor is either selected or appointed and has a term of office of 4 years. These volunteers are focused on helping the school and all in the school community achieve their full potential.

They are responsible for ensuring good quality education in the school whilst respecting the professional roles of the Head Teacher and other staff for the management of the school. The phrase often used to describe the role of governor is “a critical friend”.

The Governing Body helps to set targets and to strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life. Two key documents used for this are the School Development Plan (SDP) and the Self Evaluation Form (SEF). The SDP sets out a three year strategic plan for the school, with targets that everyone works towards and the SEF sets out how well the school is doing and where improvement is needed.

Legal duties include:

  • setting strategic direction, policies and objectives
  • approving the school budget
  • reviewing progress against the school's objectives and budget
  • appointing, supporting and challenging the Head Teacher

The full governing body meets on at least a termly basis as do most of the committees.

  • Curriculum Committee
  • Finance Committee
  • Buildings & Premises Committee
  • Personnel Committee

There are elected positions within the Governing Body and these are on an annual basis (e.g. Chairperson of the Full Governing Body or the committees).

There is a corporate governance model which means no one governor is fully responsible for any element of the work of a group or the school. The Governing Body is focused on the continuous development and improvement of the school.
